Description

The Scottish Graduate School of Social Science welcomes postgraduate research students to the following advanced training event:

Scottish Doctoral Colloquium in Accounting and Finance

6 June 2016

Heriot-Watt University

The Scottish Doctoral Colloquium in Accounting and Finance (ScotDoc) has been a core element of doctoral training in accounting and finance in Scotland for the past 17 years. The event will run over one day and include a mix of student presentations and two plenary sessions from staff members. The event will provide postgraduate students with the opportunity to present their work and receive feedback from experienced researchers in the area. Each student will have 15-20 minutes for presentations and around 5-10 minutes for discussion.

The first plenary session will be delivered by Professor Mark Clatworthy (University of Bristol) and Professor Ingrid Jeacle (University of Edinburgh) on “Research methods: gathering data from the internet”. Professor Clathworthy will discuss the use of Perl programming to extract financial data from published sources. Professor Jeacle will talk on the topic of netnography. This session will be beneficial to students doing qualitative or quantitative research. The second plenary session will be entitled "Applying for accounting & finance academic positions in Europe” and will be delivered by Professor Paul Andre (University of Lausanne, Switzerland). Professor Andre previously held academic position at the ESSEC Business School, France where he was the Head of the Accounting and Finance Group and also the Associate Dean of Research. This session aims to provide insights on recruitment into academia in accounting and finance and what heads of department are looking for in new academic staff. This is considered key in preparing the current cohort of PhD students for the transition to their future academic posts, especially in a European country other than the UK.

At the heart of the SGSSS is the Doctoral Training Partnership (formerly the Doctoral Training Centre) in Scotland. The SGSSS was established in 2011 and is the biggest of 14 Economic & Social Research Council (ESRC) accredited DTPs in the United Kingdom. The bid for renewed funding has been successful and from 1 October 2017 the SGSSS will be one of the ESRC's 14 Doctoral Training Partnerships (DTP)
